THE NUTCKRACKER IN 3D

Fantasy movie according to Petr Iljic Cajkovskij´s classical ballet The Nutcracker in coproduction of the Great Britain and Hungary. It was the first experience for me, when I worked on an epic movie of Hollywood´s standards in studio UPP. Intensive work for more than a year.

WORKING ROLE / WHAT I DID :

  • texture artist (texturing characters, doublers, vehicles, building, landscapes)
  • senior digital artist (3D modeling of buildings, props and set extensions)
  • 3D mattepainter (3D mattepaintings of cityscapes)
In 2007 I was asked to become a part of a film team. Then almost two years of my collaboration with studio UPP started. The postproduction of this VFX movie was a big school and experience for me. I met many top professionals and great artists. Some parts of the (post)production were really exhausting, others were a nice relaxation. First, I worked  on 3D creation and city set extensions (3D architecture modelling) in this project. In the next phase my specialization was texture artist and 3D mattepainter. The project itself with its fantasy environments, original and fantastic characters was a real fun sometimes. (Post)production of The Nutcracker took almost a year. During this time we developed in a great team and part of us stayed in a collaboration with UPP on other film projects. The movie was finished, studio, creators and others were waiting for its premiere. But The Nutcracker´s premiere was postponed many times and its name was changed. The delay was partly caused by the investor´s decision to transfer a complete movie from 2D format to 3D stereoscopy, which was popularized by new movie Avatar in 2009. This transfer to 3D wasn´t realized in studio UPP. The project itself wasn´t originally concipated for this form and it hurt the film technically. Anyway, The Nutcracker got the epithet 3D and later it was awarded by the unpopular nomination "Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D", like for example Clash of the Titans and more others, who didn´t understand the philosophy and complex work on real 3D stereoscopy.
